Jeremy D. Popkin is emeritus William T. Bryan chair of history at the University of Kentucky. He is the author of many books, including The First Emancipation: The Forgotten History of Abolition in Revolutionary France and You Are All Free: The Haitian Revolution and the Abolition of Slavery. He lives in Lexington, Kentucky.
